Clearly, from the reviews here, this trip was a top five experience in the Dublin area. However, I've never felt more comfortable, and Shane provided the path for us to relax and have fun. We don't travel a ton, and because of my hospitality background I almost always feel like I need to help or apologize for being "foreign".
So good I wouldn't have minded hanging out for a couple more hours. Shane gently guided us into the Blue Light Pub so we could experience the talented musicians playing inside. I'm a very shy person, an introvert by nature, (even with booze) and prefer to hang out with a couple other people. Shane is a gifted leader balanced, patient, friendly, giving and truly sincere in his delight when describing his country and its traditions. I managed hotels for a long time, and recognize true hospitality when it happens. They were super fun and hilarious! We also met a fabulous couple from Brazil, new friends from Canada and some hungover German fellas (ha). We had a super bunch of local Irish ladies on our tour celebrating a birthday the same day as my ma. Secondly, he's incredibly adept at showing people a good time getting them out of their comfort zone "comfortably", meaning I would feel good on the tour alone as well as with friends. Firstly, he's the most sincere, thoughtful, and sweet person. My hesitations seem silly now and it's 100% due to our fantastic guide, Shane.

I also spent seven months researching how to not be a "tourist" e.g., immersion in the Irish language, culture, and music. I'd rather hang out in a real Irish pub with real Irish people. His fiddle spoke for him.I was initially hesitant to book because I dislike "touristy" things, for example I didn't add the Guinness Storehouse to our trip because I refuse to walk through a commercial, etc. My only negative criticism would be that the fiddler on the night I attended was so soft-spoken that it was sometimes difficult to understand what he was saying. All-in-all, a low-key way to learn something true about Ireland and to have a good time while doing so. The cost of the entertainment is reasonable the pressure to buy drinks and a CD as you "crawl" round the pubs is non-existent. His Traditional Irish Music Pub Crawl, however, is one of the winners: a kind of seminar featuring two musicians, a fiddler and a guitarist three pubs much music and song (jigs, reels, - and lessons in how to tell the difference - ballads, a come-all-ye or two), lots of craic.
For instance, in his Ireland 2014 edition he sells the Bunratty Castle banquet short and praises the really awful Trad-on-the-Prom in Galway City. Have been a Rick Steves fan ever since Arthur Frommer could no longer afford Europe on $5-a-day, and have found some of his (Steves') recommendations very good and others not-so-hot.
